Building your postnatal support network

They always say it takes a village, but modern living often means not having family at your doorstep. You can still create a support network before and after birth.

01

Identify the support you already have

Write a list of the recurring jobs that keep your household functioning, then add any people who could realistically help with each one. This can include meals, shopping, laundry, school or nursery drop-offs, pets, transport, and short periods of baby care.

You may find lots of friends offering help, but it is best to be honest about reliability, distance, work patterns, and your relationship with them. A smaller dependable network is more useful than a long list of vague offers.

02

Add specialist support where it matters

Friends and family can provide care and practical help, but specialist questions need the right practitioner. Research and earmark maternity contacts, feeding support, GP details, health visitors, mental health and postnatal recovery support before you urgently need them.

Ask about their general availability, possibility of last minute appointments and whether they are at home, online, or in a clinic.

03

Make the plan easy to use

A support network works best when each person has a clear role and these are agreed before your baby is born.

Put essential contacts, medication information, and appointment details in one shared place. Agree who will look after older children during the birth, and if you need to go to hospital urgently. Write out a daily routine so anyone helping can easily keep them on their usual schedule.

Decide who makes calls when the recovering parent is exhausted and who can step in if the original plan changes. Review the plan after the first week. The help you imagined needing before birth may be different from the help that matters once baby is home.
