Can reflexology really help induce labour?
Overdue and curious about reflexology for labour induction? Here is the honest, real parent truth about what it can and cannot do.
What are the facts?
There is no solid scientific proof that reflexology causes labour to start. What it can do is help your body relax. And that matters more than you might think.
When you are wound tight with anticipation, your body produces stress hormones that can work against the natural release of oxytocin - the hormone that helps labour along. Reflexology applies gentle pressure to specific points on your feet linked to different organs and systems, and many parents find it helps dial down tension.
Some parents go into labour within a day or two afterwards. It could be coincidence, or it might be that a calmer body simply lets nature do its thing.
What a session actually looks like
You will lie back with props under your bump, and a qualified reflexologist will work through pressure points on your feet for about 45 to 60 minutes. It should never hurt. If it does, speak up.
Always use a reflexologist trained in maternity reflexology, and always check with your midwife first, especially before 37 weeks.
So, will it work?
We cannot promise that. But will it help you feel calmer, more in control, and more connected to your body in these final, wobbly days? Very possibly, and that can be worth booking for regardless of when baby decides to arrive.
